![]() Why are people homeless? Often it is because we don't do more for the mentally ill in our healthcare systems. ![]() What to do with the homeless is always a big question. Location: Urbana, Illinois, United States I can actually foresee the institutionalization of courses for would-be cashiers and bartenders! For fast-food employees! And every other imaginable and unimaginable vocation! We are institutionalizing ourselves to death. If you showed up without the "proper credentials", even if you were fully capable of doing the work, and were willing to do it for nothing-you would be laughed out of the place! Without that ever-glorious diploma, you are NOTHING! No one wants you. Now, you would get fined for doing any of these charitable works. My (now deceased) brother used to help in this endeavor every year at Christmas. ![]() In the winter time, blankets and hot thermoses were handed out to the homeless. The work needed to be done, and if you were qualified to do it, you felt honored to help! The poor were helped at the back doors of every respectable restaurant, and many convents and rectories assisted in this worthwhile cause. There was no mention and no expectation of payment for helping in this way. Now, you are required to study 2 years in university to do the same work! Also, in those days, we were glad to help out in any way to keep our churches running smoothly. ![]() ![]() When I was in my 20's, all you needed to be a high school secretary, was a high school secretarial diploma-or if you wanted to be a legal or medical secretary, you could take a 6-week course specializing in those fields. We have a problem today with an institutionalized society! Everything requires "expertise!" There are even university classes nowadays to qualify the student to do secretarial work. This is what happens when everything becomes institutionalized. ![]()
